Where do the formulas come from?

From published veterinary sources: energy needs use the RER formula from the NRC's Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats and the WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines, chocolate toxicity uses theobromine thresholds from the Merck Veterinary Manual, and the age charts follow AVMA and International Cat Care guidance. Every source is listed on the Methodology page.

Do the calculators replace my veterinarian?

No. The results are estimates for healthy pets and are not a diagnosis. For any health concern, emergency, or if you are unsure, always talk to your veterinarian.

Are the calculators free?

Yes, every calculator is free with no sign-up. The site is supported by links to Chewy and PETLIBRO that may earn us a commission when you buy, at no extra cost to you. No formula or result depends on those links.

Why is the result different from the feeding chart on the bag?

The chart on the bag is a broad range that has to fit every dog or cat of a given weight. The calculator works from your pet's actual weight, life stage and activity, and from the calorie density of your specific food, so it is a tighter starting point. Either way, adjust to your pet's body condition over a few weeks.
