The formula we use
RER = 70 x (weight in kg ^ 0.75) · puppy MER = RER x 3.0 (under 4 mo) or x 2.5 (4 to 12 mo) Growth is the most energy-hungry life stage: per pound of body weight a young puppy needs about twice what a neutered adult does. How much should I feed my puppy?
Feed by current weight and age. Puppies burn far more energy per pound than adults: under 4 months they need about 3 times their resting energy, and from 4 to 12 months about 2.5 times. A 10 lb puppy under 4 months on a 400 kcal/cup puppy food needs roughly 1.6 cups a day. Enter your puppy's numbers above for the exact portion.
How many meals a day does a puppy need?
Under 4 months: 4 small meals a day. From 4 to 12 months: 3 meals. Around the first birthday most dogs move to 2 meals. Small, regular meals keep a puppy's blood sugar and digestion stable.
Do I weigh my puppy every week?
Weekly is ideal during fast growth, every two weeks is fine after 6 months. The portion from this calculator is tied to current weight, so it grows with your puppy. Re-run it after every weigh-in.
When do I switch to adult food?
Small breeds finish growing around 9 to 12 months, medium breeds around 12 months, and large breeds at 12 to 18 months. Switch when your dog reaches roughly adult size, and make the transition gradual over 7 to 10 days.
Does my puppy need special puppy food?
Yes. Look for an AAFCO statement that says the food is formulated for growth or for all life stages. Large-breed puppies specifically need a large-breed growth formula with controlled calcium, which protects developing joints.
