How much water should my dog drink a day?
The veterinary reference is 50 to 60 ml per kg of body weight per day, which works out to roughly 0.8 to 0.9 fl oz per pound, close to the familiar "1 ounce per pound" rule of thumb. A 20 lb dog needs about 15 to 18 fl oz a day, a 60 lb dog about 46 to 55 fl oz. Heat and exercise push the need up significantly.
My dog drinks a lot. When is it a symptom?
If a dog consistently drinks over about 1.5 fl oz per pound per day without heat or exercise, that is called polydipsia and can point to diabetes, kidney disease or a hormonal disorder. One hot summer day is not a red flag, but a sustained jump under normal conditions deserves a vet visit with blood and urine tests.
My dog barely drinks. What should I do?
Check the bowl first: is it clean, is the water fresh daily, is it in a quiet spot. Canned food is up to 80% water, so a dog on wet food naturally drinks less. If your dog eats dry food, drinks visibly little and seems low on energy, see a veterinarian: dehydration in small dogs sets in fast.
How do I check for dehydration?
Gently lift the skin between the shoulder blades: on a hydrated dog it snaps back instantly, on a dehydrated dog it settles slowly. A second sign is tacky gums instead of moist ones. If you suspect dehydration, especially after vomiting or diarrhea, contact a veterinarian.
