How long do cats live?
An indoor cat lives 13 to 17 years on average, and cats past 20 are not rare. Outdoor cats live dramatically shorter lives, 3 to 5 years on average. Spay/neuter, indoor living and regular preventive care are the strongest longevity factors.
At what age is a cat a "teenager"?
Around 6 months a cat is roughly a human teenager: sexually maturing, testing boundaries, bursting with energy. At 1 year a cat is about 15 in human years, at 2 about 24, and then the pace slows down.
When does a cat become a senior?
Veterinary guidance treats 11 years (about 60 human years) as the start of the senior stage, and past 15 years (about 76 human years) as geriatric. Seniors do best with a checkup every 6 months and yearly bloodwork.
Do purebred cats age differently?
There are breed differences: Siamese and European Shorthairs often live past 15, while some large breeds like the Maine Coon average a bit less. The chart is a general reference for all breeds.
