How we calculate

monthly = monthly items + yearly items / 12 · yearly = monthly items x 12 + yearly items

Yearly items (vet visit, prevention) are spread evenly across the months. The pre-filled numbers are mid-2026 US averages for an indoor cat on dry or mixed food, drawn from industry sources (AVMA, APPA, ASPCA, NAPHIA): replace them with yours. Sources are listed on the Methodology page.

Food is the biggest line item

A spayed or neutered cat eats 15 to 20% less than an intact one. Work out the exact daily portion with the cat food calculator →

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cat cost per month?

A realistic routine budget for a US indoor cat is $80 to $130 a month: food $20 to $75, litter $10 to $48, plus the monthly share of the yearly vet visit and parasite prevention. Surveys bracket the year at $800 to $1,500 for a healthy indoor cat (APPA reports about $1,149 on average; the ASPCA's leaner baseline is $634). Cats on all-wet diets and insured cats sit at the high end.

What are the one-time first-year costs?

The first year adds: adoption fee $50 to $200, spay or neuter $150 to $500 if not included, initial vaccine series, microchip $35 to $60, plus litter box, carrier, scratcher and bowls. Plan on $1,200 to $2,300 total for year one. This calculator covers the recurring costs only.

What does routine vet care cost for a cat?

A wellness exam runs $45 to $75 at most US clinics, and an annual visit with vaccines typically totals $80 to $200 (the AVMA puts the average routine visit spend for cats around $138). Flea prevention adds roughly $100 to $200 a year. Indoor cats still need the annual visit: dental disease and kidney trouble are caught there, not at home.

Is pet insurance worth it for an indoor cat?

An accident and illness policy for a cat averages about $32 per month (NAPHIA, 2024 data). Cats hide illness well, and a urinary blockage or dental surgery commonly costs $1,000 to $3,000. If that bill would be a crisis, insurance or a dedicated savings account makes sense.

How do I cut costs without cutting corners on health?

Buy food and litter in bulk and watch for autoship discounts: that trims 15 to 20% off the two biggest line items. Do not skip prevention and the annual visit: missed preventive care is the most expensive saving there is, because treatment costs a multiple of prevention. Spay and neuter also pay for themselves by preventing costly diseases.
