A growing kitten needs about 2.5 times its resting energy, against 1.2 times for a spayed adult. In practice a 4 lb kitten needs around 275 calories a day, which is more than a 9 lb adult cat eats. Kittens are not small cats: per pound they are the hungriest animals in the house, because growth is expensive.
Below is the daily amount by weight, how many meals to split it into at each age, and the two moments when the portion has to change: switching to adult food and spaying or neutering.
Daily food for a kitten by weight
The figures use the veterinary formula our calculator runs on: resting energy of 70 times body weight in kilograms to the power of 0.75, multiplied by 2.5 for growth. The cups assume a dry kitten food of 400 calories per cup, and the cans assume 90 calories each. Your own label decides the final portion.

How many meals a day by age
A kitten's stomach is small relative to its needs, so the daily total is split into more meals than an adult gets.
- 8 to 12 weeks: four meals a day.
- 3 to 6 months: three meals a day.
- 6 to 12 months: two or three meals a day.
Many owners leave dry kitten food out all day at this age, which is reasonable while the kitten is growing fast. Measure what goes into the bowl each morning anyway, so you know the real daily amount when it is time to switch to set meals.
What counts as kitten food
Look for the nutritional adequacy statement on the label. It should say the food is complete and balanced for growth or for all life stages. A food labeled for adult maintenance only is not designed for a growing kitten, whatever the picture on the bag shows.
Wet and dry kitten food both work. Wet food adds water, which cats drink poorly on their own, and dry food is cheaper per calorie. The two moments the portion must drop
Spaying or neutering. Energy needs fall after the surgery while appetite often does not, which is a common start of adult weight gain. After the procedure, weigh the kitten more often and be ready to trim the portion.
Switching to adult food. Most cats move to adult food around 12 months. At that point the multiplier drops from 2.5 to about 1.2 for a spayed indoor cat, so the same cat needs roughly half the calories per pound. Change over 7 to 10 days, mixing in a growing share of the new food, and recalculate the portion with the new label. Our adult cat feeding chart takes over from there.
Frequently asked questions
Can a kitten eat too much?
Kittens regulate intake better than adults, and underfeeding during growth is the bigger risk. Still, a kitten that turns round with no visible waist is getting more than it uses. Body condition beats any chart: you should feel the ribs easily without pressing.
Why does my kitten seem hungry all the time?
Growth burns a lot of energy, and kittens eat many small meals by nature. If it is gaining weight steadily and has good energy, constant interest in food is normal. Poor weight gain despite eating well is a reason to see the veterinarian, since intestinal parasites are common in young kittens.
Can a kitten drink cow's milk?
Most cats lose the ability to digest lactose after weaning, and milk often causes diarrhea. Water is the drink; kitten milk replacer is only for kittens too young to eat solid food.
When is a kitten an adult for feeding purposes?
